The Museum of Bećarac in Pleternica has been awarded an Honourable Mention at the Živa Award for promoting the intangible cultural heritage of Bećarac, which is inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The prestigious award, organized by the Forum of Slavic Cultures for the past ten years, was held in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. The Živa Award recognizes excellence in museum practices and encourages collaboration among Slavic museums.
Among the nominees from ten countries, the Museum of Bećarac stood o
ut for its contribution to preserving local traditions and culture.
From the jury’s statement: Situated in the town square in an amphitheater-like design, the Museum of Bećarac plays a key role in preserving bećarac, a popular vocal-instrumental form deeply rooted in the culture of Eastern Croatia. The permanent exhibition follows the community’s daily life and festivities through the lens of bećarac, fostering pride in the local population and encouraging its preservation. The museum has been recognized for its innovative, educational, and interactive narrative approach, making it an attractive destination for visitors.
The award was accepted by Mirna Draženović and Mateja Kuka Brkić from the creative team Muze, presented by Sarita Vujković, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka, Branislav Panis, Director of the Slovak National Museum and Chairman of the Živa Award, and Andreja Rihter, Director of the Forum of Slavic Cultures.
