As one of the largest fortification complexes in Europe, the Fortress of Knin holds a special place in Croatian history. We are excited to present the result of our latest project: the transformation of this historic site into a modern interpretive center of the Knin Museum.
Our task was to convey the strong narrative of the fortress’s millennia-long history into an engaging exhibition story for visitors of all ages. Together with our co-authors, we have created a dynamic and playful narrative space using interactive models, abundant video and audio content, animations, illustrations, archival photographs, and inviting texts. The uniqueness of the exhibition’s scenography visual identity in the largest exhibition hall is characterized by woolen tapestries (sheep farming has played a role in the survival of local communities for millennia!) with motifs inspired by early medieval interlace.
The Fortress of Knin and its people
These interlace motifs connect us to two key protagonists of this part of the exhibition: King Zvonimir and Fra Lujo Marun. Two attractive exhibits are dedicated to them: an interactive royal throne and a multimedia book about the founder of Croatian early medieval archeology. Illustrations of Hungarian-Croatian, Ottoman, Venetian, French, and Austrian soldiers give voice to the ‘anonymous’ people whose items were unearthed by archaeological excavations at the fortress.
Adjacent to the interpretive center is a network of less accessible tunnel spaces that once served as protected artillery positions. Here, an artistic installation with a strong authorial signature has found its place. In interaction with visitors, abstract sculptures come to life with light effects and music. Thus, the spirit of the heritage site of the Fortress of Knin is energized through contemporary artistic practice, bringing heritage closer to some new audiences.
In the final exhibition segment, visitors can delve into whether the Fortress of Knin stands as a living monument, continually evolving over time. Through video storytelling, members of the local community share their impressions and experiences while archival and contemporary visuals simultaneously accompany their stories.
On the ground floor, alongside the impressive reception area, a playroom themed on archaeological research has been designed, where visitors can also try their hand at a virtual hot air balloon flight. The Fortress of Knin will reveal even more intriguing stories to visitors if they rent mixed reality glasses here. They will serve them as they embark on an innovative tour that combines the virtual and real world, making it the first such attraction in Croatia.
