From this summer shepherds are in style, at least when Northern Velebit, Croatia’s newest national park (founded in 1999), is concerned. We refer to the restoration of 10 shepherd huts on Lubenovac (4), and Alan (6), where Muses have also made their contribution.

The largest building on Alan has been set up as an educational-interpretation centre under the title of ‘Mountain Playhouse’, and it consists of a number of interactive exhibits on the theme of ‘The Nature of Species and Habitats’ of the national park and the shepherd’s traditional way of life. The huts also have an educational and interpretive function, and in them important species for the Northern Velebit National Park are detailed (the Longhorn Beetle Hut, the Velebit Leech Hut, and the Western Capercaillie Hut), as well as parts of the furnishings which were traditionally used in the huts.

On Lubenovac there is also a circular educational trail under the title of ‘The Shepherd’s Trail,’ along which there are five interpretation panels about the natural phenomena or values which can be seen at the individual places.
